When you have braces, you need to take care of them. Breaking a bracket or bending a wire can prolong your orthodontic treatment. If something does break, it is important make an appointment and get your braces fixed as soon as possible.
To avoid these problems with your braces, its a good idea to avoid hard, chewy or sticky foods in general. Here is a list of foods to avoid:
- Popcorn
- Nuts
- Hard taco shells
- Sticky and hard candy
- Gum
- Ice
- Corn chips
- Pretzels
- Hard cookies or crackers
- Sticky or hard chocolate
- Raw vegetables
- Croutons
- French/Italian bread
- Hard Fruit
- Hard rolls
- Thin crust pizza
- Meat
- Burgers
- Sub sandwiches
- Corn on the cob
So what can you eat with braces? You can eat lots of things!
- Bananas
- Yogurt
- Light crackers or cookies
- Cheese
- Mashed potatoes
- Melons
- Grapes
- Peanut butter and jelly
- Ravioli, spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, and other noodle dishes
If you are going to eat something that might damage your braces, it is a good idea to cut it up into smaller pieces. Also, you’ll want to avoid biting into things with your front teeth.
