What is Invisalign®?
Invisalign® is an orthodontic treatment that is used to straighten teeth without the use of traditional metal braces. Instead, a series of custom-made clear aligners are used to gently push the teeth into the proper position over time. These aligners are made up of a thermoplastic material that is specially made for the Invisalign® treatment plan, and appear similar to teeth-whitening trays.
There are many benefits to using Invisalign® over traditional braces. Not only are the aligners virtually invisible so people may not even notice that you are wearing them, they are removable as well, making eating, drinking, and brushing easy. Plus, Invisalign® visits do not involve wire or metal adjustments, so you will probably spend less time in the office, as well as experience less discomfort as your teeth adjust.
Who is a Candidate for Invisalign®?
Adults, teens and young kids who require a mild to moderate level of teeth straightening can often benefit from the Invisalign® treatment. However, every individual patient is different, which is why Dr. Joffre will assess your teeth and mouth to recommend the best possible treatment plan. If you are interested in learning more about whether Invisalign® is a good option for you, contact our office to schedule an appointment today!
The Invisalign® Treatment Process
The first step in the Invisalign® treatment process is an examination which includes x-rays, and a 3D digital scan of your teeth, which will help map out a custom treatment plan just for you. Your customized aligners will then be created, which you will need to wear every day (20-22 hours per day), except when you are eating, flossing, or brushing your teeth. We will help you schedule regular appointments about every 4-12 weeks, depending on your individual treatment plan. During these visits, we will ensure that your treatment is progressing as anticipated. Depending on your unique case, some patients may be able to complete treatment in as little as six months, however, the average case takes about 12-15 months for adults.
Following your Invisalign® treatment, you may need to wear a retainer to keep your teeth in alignment. Those who do not wear a retainer following Invisalign® treatment often see that their teeth gradually shift back to their original position.
What are Invisalign® “Attachments”?
Some patients may need “attachments” to help their aligner best grip the teeth. These “attachments” are small bumps or wells made of enamel-colored composites that are placed on the teeth during the Invisalign® treatment process. They are used to ensure that we see the desired amount of movement from your teeth for the best possible results.
