We understand that you may have some questions regarding orthodontics. Because of this, we have complied a list of the most frequently asked questions and the answers to these questions to help make your orthodontic journey as smooth as possible.

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, interception, guidance, and correction of dental irregularities. A specialist known as an orthodontist is the person to consult for orthodontic treatment.

At what age can I see an orthodontist?

Anyone at any age who wishes to improve their smile can benefit from orthodontic treatment. However, according to the American Association of Orthodontics, children should first visit an orthodontist around the age of seven. Teens and adults can also benefit from treatment.

What is Invisalign?

The Invisalign treatment involves wearing a series of clear aligners that will gradually straighten your teeth. There are no brackets or wires involved, and the aligners are removable, so you can eat and brush your teeth easily! Visit our Invisalign page for more information.

What are braces?

Braces are orthodontic devices that are used to align and straighten the teeth. Nowadays, there is a variety of different types of braces, including traditional metal braces, invisible braces, self-ligating braces, lingual braces, gold braces, ceramic braces, and clear braces.

How long will I have to wear braces?

Each patient’s treatment time will depend on the amount of correction needed. Each smile will respond differently due to many different factors. However, braces treatments can take between 6-30 months to complete. The average treatment length is 22 months.

Do I have to brush my teeth with braces?

Yes! It is very important to brush your teeth at least three times a day when wearing braces to keep your mouth, gums, and teeth clean and healthy. Brushing will remove any food that may have gotten stuck between the braces, while flossing will clean between the braces where a regular toothbrush can’t reach.

How often will I need a dental checkup with braces?

With braces, it is important to have a dental checkup every six months to ensure that your teeth are healthy. With braces, food can get caught, which can cause a buildup of bacteria which can lead to cavities. Dr. Joffre will work with your dentist to ensure that your teeth are in tip-top shape when wearing braces.

Do braces interfere with activities or sports?

While it may take some time to adjust to your braces, they will not prevent you from participating in your favorite sports and activities. If you play a contact sport, be sure to wear an orthodontic mouthguard to protect your braces while playing.
